about

pieces is one of those songs that was "years in the making" only we never planned to make it. in march 2013 i was invited to long beach to attend a meeting by a friend who was holding a music event the next month in april. i was offered a vendor slot at the event for my brand always watching. after the meeting we got together at my friends house for dinner and drinks. a friend of his showed up and we got to talking. turns out he made beats. he couldn't quite pin point his style so he said he'd email me a couple and if i liked them i could rap on them. a few days later he sent me two. lo and behold they were the style i'd been looking for at the time.

that following month in april the music event took place in joshua tree california. by this point i'd already been playing this particular beat "pieces" trying to write to it. ideas here and there but nothing ever stuck. eventually i got a new phone and never transferred pieces over so i forgot about it.

8 years later while going through an old hard drive i came across "pieces" again. i immediately thought of my brother phillie so i sent it to him. a week later he messaged me "this reminds me of some storytelling being on drugs in joshua tree type shit." i was totally mind blown because that beat was from back then when i'd gone to joshua tree for the first time and had done molly for my first time. the fact that he had this idea was even more special to me because he had gone out to that event with me 8 years ago. i have no idea if maybe i played it back then on our trip and it was still stuck in his subconscious? who knows?

when he came to lace his verse at my house i knew exactly what i needed to do to compliment him. i wrote two real life verses about being in joshua tree with a female. the time from 8 years ago and a time 1 year ago. the more recent experience is the one that stuck.

instead of doing a traditional "rap verse" i decided to try something new by essentially "talking" over the beat and not necessarily rhyming. i was happy with it, and phillie loved it and how i painted a picture so i knew i hit my goal.

the cover photo is an actual picture from joshua tree from that more recent time my verse is describing. i've always loved those little details that make the art that much more honest. i hope you all enjoy this song as much as we loved creating it.

all the best,
